O'Connor win a Gloves story

Bryan O'Connor and Rafael Musse spent some time alone on Valentine's Day, getting close to one another and even embracing a few times.

But no one at the South Jamaica PAL last night would confuse the two for a couple. When the 132-pound novices met in the ring, they landed quick exchanges and a few glancing blows in their three-round bout in the Daily News Golden Gloves.

O'Connor (Webster PAL) attacked Musse (Suffolk PAL) with his jab and forced his way inside to land a few damaging overhand rights, including a flurry before the final bell to lock up the decision for the 16-year-old.

The P.C. Richard & Son Boxer of the Night is half Puerto Rican and half Irish and boxing runs through 100% of his blood. "My father is a coach and my mom is a ref," said O'Connor, whose brother, Michael, won the 141-pound novice Gloves title last year. "My whole family knows that I'm going to win this."

In other 132-pound action, Jarrell Warren, out of Newburgh BC, had to chase William Uy, fighting out of Yonkers YMCA, all over the ring but caught him with enough jabs and rights to earn the three-round decision.

Super heavyweight Mark Jackson, weighing in at 308 pounds, made everything look easy in his three-round win over Steven Stahlman, out of Lost Battalion BC.

Jackson, out of Bettinelli's Community Boxing Academy, used his overhand right in the third to open a scut under Stahlman's nose, which helped seal the decision.

The Gloves continues Friday at New South Bronx (Longwood) PAL. First bout, 8 p.m.

CORRECTION: The Daily News printed incorrect results of two Gloves fights in Friday's editions. Eric Vincente, 132-pound novice out of Brotherhood BC, defeated Jose P. Coles of New Bed-Stuy BC in a three-round decision. Francisco Sanchez, 178-pound novice fighting out of Westside BC, defeated Jose Mieles, out of Red Hook Recreational, in a three-round decision Thursday.
